Searching for that perfect event speaker can be daunting. The National Speakers Association has local chapters that will list speakers who live in your area. You can start with this list, or you can ask other local business acquaintances. They may have recommendations for a speaker that is perfect for your type of event.

Here are some things you should consider before hiring an event speaker:

1. What type of speaker will you need? Educational, motivational, keynote, humorous, business experts, sports celebrities, authors, workshop leader and the list goes on.

2. What do you hope the speaker will achieve? What do you want the audience to take away from the event?

3. Ask colleagues for recommendations. Be specific with the type of speaker you are looking for. Professional speakers usually have only one or two areas that they are qualified to speak for.

4. What is your budget and is the speaker within that price range?

5. Contact the potential speaker to see if they are available.

6. Ask for references. Look past their fancy brochures and ask to speak with people that have used the particular speaker you are considering. What is the speaker's experience?

7. Provide the speaker with your requirements. Ask them to give you an outline of what they will be speaking about.

8. Sign a contract once plans are agreed on.

When figuring your budget, you may need to include transportation and hotel accommodations for your speaker.

Remember that choosing the right speaker for can help your event be the successful one you are hoping for. If the speaker fails in any way, this will be a reflection on you. So be sure to do your homework, check those references, and speak with others who have used the speaker you plan on hiring. Don't forget a back up plan in case your speaker runs into any problems or worse, doesn't show up.
